"The meat industry has contributed to more American deaths_than all the wars of this and the last century, all the natural disasters and all the automobile accidents combined."
~ Neal D. Barnard, M.D
If we want to live long, happy and productive lives, it is important that we take care of our bodies and maintain our health. Our bodies are the temples we inhabit this lifetime. If we honor them and accord them what they need, we will stay strong, energetic, flexible and youthful. All the evidence points to the fact that:
the healthiest lifestyle is a vegan one.
[vegan = consuming no animals or products from animals]
A dairy farmer and meat proponent, T. Colin Campbell traveled the world, feeding hungry people with meat, dairy and eggs (the S.A.D. diet ~the Standard American Diet). He studied the effects of the food he shared. In his five decade study, with millions of people of all different ethnicities, cultures and body types, he found that the more meat, dairy and eggs he fed them, the more they came down with all the major and minor diseases (cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, kidney and liver disease, impotence, osteoporosis, etc) and conversely, the less he fed this fare, the healthier they became.
His conclusion was that the perfect amount of animal foods to be consumed daily for optimal health is ~ zero, zip, nada, rien, niechevo, nothing, absolutely no animal carcasses (fish and chicken corpses included) and no animal products (dairy, eggs, honey). He published his findings in this best selling book, “The China Study: the Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted” (http://www.thechinastudy.com/)
This study makes perfect sense when we consider that humans have all the anatomical and physiological features consistent with other herbivores (plant eaters). Though humans are most often described as omnivores, it is easy to see this justification for consuming carcasses doesn’t reflect the reality of our actual physiology. Our bodies are simply not designed to be graveyards for dead animals (dairy or eggs).

- 2 - Cow
- 3 - Cat
- 4 - Dog
- 5 - Horse
The chart below ("Humans are biologically herbioves") by Dr Milton Mills in his “The Comparative Anatomy of Eating ” shows emphatically the distinction between the anatomical features of carnivores, omnivores and herbivores as is also described here:
It’s easy to conclude from this chart that humans are herbivores and that eating according to our natures and physiology is an important step towards maintaining health.
Longevity is another factor in health. John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World, went around the planet and visited various societies. He found the four longest living ones, the Abkhasia in the Caucasus south of Russia, the Vilcabamba in the Andes of South America, the Hunza in Central Asia, and the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa, the modern Shangri-la and wrote about them in his book, Healthy at 100, Healthy at 100 Here, he describes how these people live on a vegan diet till age 125 and 150, still active, energetic, and important participants in their communities.
Many people throughout history have discovered the importance of being vegan, as well. They spoke out and touted the health, ethical and other benefits of this lifestyle. Rynn Berry describes many of these in his outstanding book Famous Vegetarians.
Nowadays, the number of people waking up to the health benefits of eating from the abundance of the plant universe is growing by leaps and bounds. PeTA’s Vegetarian Starter Kit features all the actors, athletes and famous people who have chosen the vegan path. Even a whole firehouse in Austin, Texas went vegan. Read about these firefighters of Team C at Firehouse 2 as described in this NY Times article:
It’s not hard to make the transition. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (the PCRM ~ http://pcrm.org/ ) may answer some of your questions in their “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ) section here:
You might want to order a (free) Vegetarian Starter Kits from any one (or all) of the various animal rights and vegan groups such as those below:
We have all the abundance of the plant universe without killing, cruelty, defiling our body-temples and destroying the planet in the process. If you care about your health, that invaluable wealth, take that first step. Once you’re on the vegan path (of compassion, health and earth sustainability), everything else will follow.
