End War - Think Peas, Wars Cease

“As Long as there are Slaughterhouses, there Will Be Battlefields”
Leo Tolstoy

The relationship between war and commodifying and consuming animals for food is undeniable and has been understood from very early on.

As soon as humans began to enslave (“domesticate”) animals and use them for food, the relations between humans and other humans underwent a profound transition.

The Family, private property and the state.

The Aryan Sanskrit word for War, gavyaa, means literally “the desire for more cattle” or “looking for other people’s cattle to steal,” or “cattle raiding.” Cattle raiding was tantamount to a declaration of war.

Socrates in The Republic describes this relationship clearly in his questions to Glaucon:

Socrates:  And if people eat animals, we shall have muchgreater need of physicians than before?

Glaucon: Much greater.

Socrates: And the country which was enough to support the original inhabitants will be too small now, and not enough?

Glaucon: Quite true.

Socrates: Then a slice of our neighbours' land will be wanted by us for pasture and tillage, and they will want a slice of ours, if, like ourselves, they exceed the limit of necessity, and give themselves up to the unlimited accumulation of wealth?

Glaucon: That, Socrates, will be inevitable.

Socrates: And so we shall go to war, Glaucon. Shall we not?

Glaucon: Most certainly, he replied.

"We pray on Sundays that we may have light/ To guide our footsteps on the path we tread; / We are sick of war, we don't want to fight,/And yet we gorge ourselves upon the dead." ~ George Bernard Shaw

And finally we have the great writer and vegetarian Leo Tolstoy who said:

“As Long as there are Slaughterhouses, there Will Be Battlefields”
